In the article Higher
Education, Lower Opportunity, the author begins with a description of
education 250 years ago. This is
effective because the author shows how education has transformed in those 250
years. He describes how without the 14th
amendment, which grants all born in the U.S. are granted citizenship, which
influenced the decision in a 1982 Supreme Court case. His main argument is that the education
system is a “rags to riches” system. He
does a good job of giving examples and interviews with some of these
students. He uses these as his main
argument to influence is opinion that Congress needs to pass a law in order to
allow immigrant students the same opportunities as native born American citizens.
