Ted Talk by Kevin Slavin: How Algorithms Shape Our World

This is the rest of a video we watched only a minute of in class. It's an interesting discussion for lay people (aka non math people) about the maths behind both nature and technology. It's funny to me that we assume 'someone' out there must understand how all this complicated stuff works. I know that I usually feel this way--"Just because I don't know how an Iphone works doesn't mean other people don't." But as Slavin points out, things have gotten away from us. The collaboration between humans and machines has progressed to a stage where we aren't quite sure how to retrace our steps. Not even the machines can always tell us what happened. That gap between our brains and Theirs fascinates me.

PS: Yes, this is an example of what you should do.

  1. Oh, and comment on one another's posts! (The only requirements are to be intelligent, interesting, and respectful of one another.)

  2. Also, I do not know why, but there is a hyphen in the title of this blog that should not be there. I don't know how that happened. It's going to drive me crazy, but, alas, nothing can be done--I'd have to invite you all again, and things would be even more confusing pour tous de nous. I just couldn't sleep tonight if I didn't acknowledge that horrendous grammatical error.
